TMJ disorder is a broad term used to describe discomfort, distress, or some form of dysfunction in the temporomandibular joints that hinge your jaw. The muscles, connective tissues and cartilage structure of these joints are quite complex, and a minor issue with one or two components can lead to chronic discomfort.

Early symptoms include a dull ache in the temples or in front of the ears. TMJ disorder sufferers also often complain of discomfort when biting down and chewing or an uncomfortable clicking sensation in the joints.

Determining the root cause of your TMJ disorder as well as the other factors involved will go a long way toward determining the best course of treatment Dr. Jaime Rivera advocates at his, El Paso, Texas clinic.

The stress-related condition known as bruxism, can cause you to grind your teeth on a regular basis. This is one of the more common causes of TMJ disorder. The tension placed on the muscles, joints and related connective tissue can cause muscles soreness and inflammation problems.

In a case like this, you might find significant relief from using a dental guard when you sleep. This is a soft, yet durable plastic material allows teeth to slip easily, while also providing some cushioning. This can also help to prevent chips on your teeth from the extreme grinding pressure.

A dislocation in either one of the temporomandibular joints, could also cause TMJ discomfort. This could mean that one of the hinged joints did not seat back together correctly. The misalignment in the joint can cause inflammation and early onset of arthritis.

Even if there haven’t been previous dislocation issues, the natural process of aging and use can also cause TMJ arthritis. This could then further escalate TMJ discomfort if you grind your teeth at night.

If you live in the El Paso, Texas area and you are struggling with TMJ discomfort, you should call 915-592-5853 for professional treatment at Dr. Jaime Rivera’s orthodontic clinic.
