In order to ensure your smile can continue to thrive, it is important to routinely check your mouth from any indications of tooth slippage or bad bites. If a bad bite, also called a malocclusion, is present, it will need to be treated with an orthodontic therapy to straighten your smile.

If you have any malocclusions with your incisors, they will need orthodontic therapy. The numerous versions that can arise with your incisors including misplaced midlines, underbites, crossbites, overbites, deep bites, and open bites. Depending on your oral health condition, and the bad bites that you have, your orthodontist can determine which treatment is best for your condition.

Other common malocclusions that can arise include spacing malocclusions in which there are irregular gaps and spaces between teeth that otherwise should not be there. In addition, if teeth have erupted above the gum line in the wrong spots, or if there are spaces and gaps that are incorrect between teeth, they will need to be repositioned back to their proper location. Furthermore, rotation malocclusions can arise, in which teeth rotate out of alignment.

– Rotation malocclusions are present when teeth are not in their proper location and position.
– Underbites, also called bulldog teeth, are present when your lower incisors stick out past your upper incisors.

Have you ever been in for a malocclusion exam? A malocclusion is an alignment issue with your teeth or jaw where they do not function or align as intended. Usually, malocclusions can be fixed with orthodontic treatments and therapies designed to straighten smiles and improve oral health.

Most malocclusions occur within the incisors, which are the front teeth in the mouth. They are prominently presented on both the upper and lower rows in your jaw. Various types of incisor malocclusions include deep bites (also called closed bites), overbites (also called upper protrusions or buck teeth), misplaced midlines, open bites, and underbites (also called bulldog teeth).

Other forms of malocclusions include transposition malocclusions, spacing malocclusions, and rotation malocclusions. Transposition malocclusions arise when teeth erupt above the gumline in the wrong locations. Spacing malocclusions include abnormal gaps and overcrowded teeth. Rotation malocclusions are simply teeth that have rotated out of their proper alignments.  Another common type of malocclusion that is often treated with orthodontic braces is crossbites, which occurs when the lower jawbone sticks out past the upper jawbone.
